What is Spray Foam Insulation?
What is spray foam insulation?
When investigating the option of spray foam insulation in San Diego, one of the first questions that comes to mind is how it actually works. The main material that makes up spray insulation is known as Polyurethane.
When applied, spray foam is actually liquid which allows it to reach all the areas in the applied area that was previously inaccessible to other kinds of insulation. After some time, the liquid then turns into foam and provides the best kind of insulation available today.
The fact that this kind of insulation is able to reach into even the tightest of spaces makes it perfect for crawl space insulation. Since it is able to be applied to a house or building completely, spray foam insulation becomes a key player when you are trying to cut down energy usage.
It does such a great job keeping you comfortable inside your home that you can reduce usage of appliances to heat or cool your space.

One of the main benefits of this solution is that it provides the perfect insulation for your walls and attic, therefore it is able to maintain an ambient temperature inside the building.
No one likes noise from the outside, so, if you just want a little peace and quiet then you are in luck because spray foam is one of the greatest ways to achieve soundproof insulation. With the help of spray foam attic insulation, you can reduce the size of your HVAC system. If you want to ensure that the temperature in your home or office always remains comfortable, then you need to make sure that you get your home insulated. Spray polyurethane foam (SPF) not only keeps the heat or cold out, but it also ensures that no moisture or unpleasant air enters your living space. Most other forms of insulation, like cellulose insulation, do not provide these benefits. This is why we recommended that you opt for spray foam insulation in San Diego. It is not only more effective but it is also a healthier alternative. |

Spray foam is a synthetic material and it is usually made from a combination of a few different chemicals. The material is designed in such a way that it starts off as a liquid but starts to expand as it solidifies. One of the main reasons why people are opting for spray foam insulation is because it is able to reach every nook and cranny of the home and doesn’t leave any uncovered spots. This is something that is considered to be impossible when it comes to traditional insulation methods. So, if you are thinking about constructing a new home or office building then you should opt for spray foam insulation solutions. |
Eco-Friendly Green Insulation in San Diego
Ever heard of the term “Green Buildings”? Yes, the buildings being cost effective, energy efficient, thermally controlled and at the same time more peaceful to give a proper good night sleep. For many decades, homeowners have been applying insulations for their homes and buildings as one time investment. This greatly reduces electricity costs.
There exist many types of insulations which are Fiberglass, Cellulose and Spray Foam insulations etc. Most of the homes in California have been using Fiberglass (FB) insulation. However, among them Spray foam insulation is the most effective insulation today.
Spray Polyurethane-foam (SPF) is actually a mixture of two separate chemicals, polyol resin and isocyanate (petroleum mixture), which when react together expand to about 50 times of their liquid volume. Unlike fiberglass, SPF doesn’t arrive in the form of sheets. SPF is applied by a spray gun for wall insulation, roof insulation, crawl space insulation and for many industrial packaging purposes. It is a time saving and durable technique for industrialists and homeowners as it works like a spraying process. The efficiency of insulation is measured by its thermal resistance (R-value). Higher the R-value, the more effective is the insulation. There are two types of SPF insulations:

Open-Cell Foam Insulation
This type is also called low density foam or half pound foam. As said by its name, this one has a lighter insulation effect. Open Cell foam acts as a Sound Barrier and Air barrier for homes and buildings. Its R-value ranges from 3.8 to 5.5 depending upon the thickness of foam. Open Cell is usually installed for indoor insulation and is not recommended for outdoor applications.
Closed-Cell Foam Insulation
Closed cell is also called high density and two pound insulation. It has a high R-value of 6.2. It acts as air barrier, sound barrier and vapor barrier as well. The composition of Two pound foam has pores completely sealed and doesn’t allow penetration of water. It is currently the most efficient insulation in market especially when it comes to locations like California where there is high moisture content in air. It also costs higher than other insulations.
There are six kinds of heat transfer phenomena from outdoor environment to indoor.
Conduction: Heat transfer through material (solid) medium.
Convection: Heat transfer through movement of Air or any other fluid.
Radiation: Heat transfer in the form of waves e.g. Sunlight.
Air Infiltration: Slow penetration of Air into outside environment.
Moisture Accumulation: Moisture in outdoor environment affecting the indoor environment.
Air Intrusion: Forced entry of outdoor air through holes and cavities.
Heat gain or Heat loss happens through any of these mentioned processes. However, SPF insulation is capable of blocking all heat transfer mechanisms resulting in a better comfort in buildings.

More Advantages of Spray Foam Insulation in San Diego
- It has High R-value than other available insulations. It makes your home safer than you ever have desired.
- Thermal resistance doesn’t reduce over the passage of time which is very common in fiberglass insulation. Either it is today or after ten years, R-value of SPF quality will not reduce.
- It is physically stronger. There is No fear of sagging or settling of insulation as when it is installed properly, it stays there for ages.
- SPF insulation is accepted as ‘FLOOD RESISTANT MATERIAL” by FEMA which means it can endure direct and long lasting contact with floodwater. It protects the walls from significant damage by floodwater.
- SPF foam expands and sticks to any type of surface it touches without shrinking.
- Air leakage causes home’s cooling and heating costs above 30 percent. SPF seals roof and wall holes and cavities thereby saving the homeowners money on cooling and heating costs. It has the lowest air permeability keeping you safe from outside climate conditions. Consistent rains, and winds doesn’t change the indoor environment.
- Gaps and cavities are common in traditional insulations. On the other hand, SPF seals wall cracks and holes completely giving strength to the building.
- Other insulations last for 10 years at max and there R-value is greatly reduced over time. SPF is more durable than fiberglass and cellulose insulations (above 30 years).
- In locations close to Sea side, moisture is the greatest danger to buildings. SPF ensures protection from moisture and hazardous gases.
- It provides great reduction in noise pollution.
- SPF demands less maintenance than other insulation systems.
- Faster to install.
How Spray Foam is Installed
SPF insulation is created on site by mixing two chemicals in compressed form and is applied by spraying on the surface. As the mixture is burst out, it starts expanding like a foam. SPF is installed by expert team of agents who have proper installation trainings and safety precautions.
The spray gun is a type of internal mix. It provides complete mixing of two chemicals. The insulation is applied in two or three passes. First pass has the minimum thickness of ½ inch to maximum 3 inches thickness. After first pass, the foam is allowed to cool down. Cooling time is 10 to 15 minutes per inch thickness of foam for example, 3 inches foam requires 30 to 45 minutes to cool down. SPF is not applied thicker than 3 inches in the first pass. |
Dangers of Spray Foam
SPF insulation is a mixture of dangerous chemicals. The mixture is created on site where the insulation has to be applied. The chemicals used in insulation making pose a potential hazard. Those who have no experience in handling polyurethane and its processing must take proper training first.
It is highly recommended not to apply the insulation yourselves and always call for insulation experts. DIY spray foam insulation might be a bad idea when you don’t know about SPF insulation.
Under specific conditions, the foam may cause combustion still after 10 hours of application as well. For cleaning, only nonflammable solvents must be used. SPF insulation components mix with air and cause breathing problems. Inhaling and exposing yourself must be avoided in any case.
